Four singer-songwriters, four different voices, each with their own discernible songs and sound. The Brills have a unique combination of acoustic/electric music with their trademark vocal harmonies.
The Brills are:
- Heather Mac, playwright, singer, actress and director had great success in the 80’s with pop-rock band Ella Mental in SA and in the early nineties performed in many prestigious shows overseas, including the Montreux Jazz Festival. Since returning to SA she has performed in a number of productions with Jazzart and created music/theatre shows that have toured the country.
- Ian Cohen formerly of the internationally recognized band, Bright Blue, was a solid contributor to their uniquely South African sound. He brings his own brand of vocals and acoustic bass playing to the mix.
- Tonia Selley is an accomplished percussionist, guitarist and singer whose previous band ‘The Pressure Cookies’ had great radio play with their hit ‘Don’t call me Baby’. She is also percussionist and backing vocalist for polular SA artist, Nataniel.
- Mark Harris played a key role in bands Cool Bananas and The Tasty Free Radicals and has a keen following whenever he plays his Tom Waits show. He has accompanied Heather Mac in performances for many years.
The Brills have been active in the Western Cape over the past two years and in November 2008 headlined the R62 Unplugged Festival in the Karoo which included artists such as Valiant Swart, Jan Blohm and James Stewart from The Usual. They also performed at the 2009 Splashy Fen Music Festival in the Drakensberg.
